My fine art photography & video now focuses on water. Water has always fascinated me in many ways: its many forms, the ways it moves, its' transformational powers, its' fundamental role in life on earth.
What makes water water? When I drink water I always wonder how old it is? What does age mean in reference to water? How many times through the liquid—evaporation—condensation cycle has it been? For that matter, what is 'it' in the context of water?
Water exemplifies the power of the gentle and fluid to create change in even the hardest of substances. Ever been to the bottom of a river canyon? Think about the water wearing the rock and creating the canyon over many, many, years.
Water plays major roles in a number of spiritual and magical traditions. It reflects: remember Narcissus? But the reflection it provides can be a tricky one: sometimes the difference between 'reflection' and 'illusion' is naught. It cleanses—and that on lots of levels.
Our relationship with water typifies that we have with the earth, our environment, and the rest that nurtures and sustains us. Unfortunately these days abuse and commoditzation best describe this relationship. On the one hand we pollute with abandon, we bottle 'special' water and ship it around the globe, local water distribution systems go on the auction block and are traded on an international market. (A Canadian friend points out that the Canadians exempted water from NAFTA and are worried that the USA might invade them for their water. Far fetched, maybe.)
Water has many lessons to teach us, we have only to attend. When photographing, I always ask 'who wants to be portrayed, and how? What do you want to share with the world?' These images are some of water's answers.
